Great book, incredible ending
Review written by: Derrick Hahn From
A great book that I couldn't put down. I had heard people either loved or hated this book and I absolutely loved this book. The last line I let out a great laugh. Just to give you an idea of how much I couldn't put this book down, I finished this book over the course of the week before my wedding and during the honeymoon. An awesome book that I think you should read.
An Indian boy, a Bengal tiger, and the ocean on a journey to God
Review written by: Christina Lockstein From Oconto Falls, WI USA
I'd heard a bit about Life of Pi by Yann Martel, not much, but the title was familiar. I wish that someone had said to me in 2001 when it came out that I needed to read this book. Seriously, shaken me by the shoulders saying: Read this book! Pi Patel is a serious minded 16 year old boy who is traveling with his family from India to Canada with a few of their animals from their zoo. But the Japanese cargo ship they are traveling on soon sinks leaving Pi alone in a life boat with an injured zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger. The animals soon lay waste to each other until only the tiger, named Richard Parker, and Pi are left to travel 277 days across the Pacific Ocean. How does a boy who calls himself Hindu, Christian, and Muslim survive against a monstrous predator when he is the only prey within reach? Pi narrates his story with great humility. As he recounts each act he took to protect himself from the tiger and then provide for the two of them, you can't help but marvel at both his ingenuity and his spirit. This is one of those carefully crafted novels where each paragraph is a marvel of grace and fluidity. Martel upsets the apple cart a bit in the end forcing the reader to decide which story they would choose, and in the end, which view of life as well. It's a powerful novel beautifully told.
Ewwww!
Review written by: helena handbasket From Birmingham, Alabama
The plot line is so compelling - fascinating - I would so love to get inside the author's head .. or thought I would until I read the scenes about Richard Parker eating fish, animals or humans ... or any of the savagery perpetrated amongst the animals ... and it so overshadowed the interest in the book. All I can say is, "ewwwww!"
I am Still Thinking About this Book
Review written by: freespirit From KVille, NC, USA
Interesting book, although it drags on a little in the middle. At the end of the book I found myself trying to analyze all plausible meanings of the entire book. I was actually quite surprised that in the last few pages the author could crank up my curiosity to review in my mind just what had happened throughout the entire book, with a PI's (private investigators) zest.
Ridiculous
Review written by: H. R From usa
The book started out very well with describing a zoo in India and the different animals. But the rest was awful. It has so many loose points and the whole story of the boy and the tiger in the lifeboat is just ridiculous. I think if one wants to argue of faith in God vs atheism should pick a better more realistic story.
